I’ve been getting chiropractic care from Dr. Mark for the last year and have found it to be priceless. As my core has grown and adjusted to having a straight spine, Dr. Mark recommended I start practicing stick stretching to loosen up my hips, shoulders and generally work on my balance. I started with a simple 15 minute dvd with some guided stretches and then took to it myself discovering all sorts of nooks and crannies in my body that I had previously been ignorant of.

Stick stretching is pretty much what it sounds like. One uses a 3-7 foot martial arts stick to explore the range of motion in all the joints of the body. The stick adds stability to the stretches and also facilitates flexibility that I didn’t even know I had.

I can also use the stick to self massage various parts that have always been super stiff.

I spend about 15 minutes every day loosening up with the stick before I begin any of my other physical activities like biking or working out with the soccer ball.

Opioid Crisis solved by Chiropractors

Chiropractors for over 100 years have been treating the body directly through the nervous system for pain and anxiety issues. The nervous system is the central controlling authority of the other eight. The answer to managing opioid toxicity is by Chiropractors being the Holistic Naturopaths that they are. Are You Just Breathing?

From the moment we are born we gasp for that first important breath that will keep us alive for three quarters of a century or more. Ancient forms of medicine knew that poor breathing reduces our vitality and lessens our ability to ward off disease. Let’s briefly look at one aspect of how this works.
The absence of carbon dioxide creates deficiencies in bicarbonate ions. Potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium are buffers for this process. It is commonly known that carbon dioxide respiration through carbonic acid via the lungs is a dominant acid control mechanism. Bicarbonate via the kidneys is the dominant alkali control for the blood. The deficiency in carbon dioxide can adversely affect the acid/alkali balance system. This dysfunction normally happens when tissues tend towards anaerobic metabolism resulting in elevated accumulation of lactic acid and hydrogen ions. Stress and Disease

Who has stress?  We all do.  But does anyone know what it is?

Stress produces pain and disease, which may be eased by medical or alternative treatments that target individual symptoms, but most treatments miss the underlying cause of stress.

Most of the uncomfortable and unhealthy physiological reactions we have to the stressors in our environment are a result of the brain’s failure to adequately regulate the nervous system.

The brain is the body’s control center. It manages the function of every organ, system and cell. When brain rhythms become dysregulated due to unhealthy lifestyles or environmental toxins, the brain is unable to keep the rest of the body in harmony.

Messages from the brain must travel down the spinal cord and reach the body’s organs without interference. Neurological pathways must be able to transmit accurate information from the organs back to the brain. The three basic kinds of stressors – trauma, thoughts and toxins – interfere with the electro-chemical transmission of messages along the body’s neurological pathways, keeping organs and systems from functioning as they should.

So what happens if the body is out of balance?  Systems no longer work in a state of ease, and the body requires more energy to adapt to the events of life and the world around it. Energy destined for growth and normal repair has to go to keeping everything working the best it can, and the body becomes weak.

Medicine’s traditional approach to correct maladaptive patterns in the nervous system has been to develop drugs that either stimulate or depress the system to attempt a normal balance or homeostasis.

But now, a growing body of research shows that chiropractic adjustments, long known as an effective way to maintain muscle and joint health, produce neurological stimulus that interrupts interference patterns to “reboot” the nervous system so the brain can reset itself.

The treatment I provide in my clinic is a neuro-chiropractic protocol that reorganizes brain and nervous system function by using the electroencephalogram (EEG).

I measure for imbalance in the cortex and the limbic system by gauging physiological responses. Common measurements I take include brain wave activity, heart rate, heart rate variability (the relationship between heart and respiration), respiratory rate, hand temperatures and skin conductance (skin moisture).

The impulses or frequencies are measured in hertz by the EEG to detect dysregulation. A healthy brain should be able to move easily from one frequency to the next and maintain a balanced ratio among them, enabling the cortex and limbic system to communicate with each other for overall function.

The cortex, or outer brain, is the seat of most of our memories and emotions as well as our motor functions. It communicates information by electrical-chemical impulse. The limbic system, or inner brain, operates by influencing the endocrine and autonomic systems. It manages our unconscious functions such as breathing, heart rate, temperature, and perspiration.

The EEG monitors rhythms that modulate the nervous system’s response to stress, enabling practitioner and patient to determine courses of action to change a dysregulated system into an adaptable one.

Neuro-chiropractic treatment includes chiropractic adjustments to the nervous system, health awareness (identification of good habits and bad habits), nutritional and physical reconditioning education, biofeedback, neurofeedback and brain entrainment protocols.

Treatment components realign the body to its natural state, achieving balance and long term health without drugs or surgeries.

The neuro-chiropractic treatment is a non-pharmacological means to interrupt maladaptive nervous system patterns, preventing disease and achieving homeostasis, a healthy balance.

A well-balanced person not only looks younger, but remains active and vibrant, experiencing more acute awareness, good recovery ability, high energy, few symptoms, resistance to infections, a positive attitude, and mental alertness. In short, excellent health.

Treating the symptoms of stress may provide temporary relief, but only understanding and acting on the underlying causes can promote long-term health.

Pain Hurts But Stress Kills

Clinical studies in the last 10 years show the benefits of chiropractic adjustments beyond reduction of pain and inflammation. Studies using EEGs and PET scans of the brain demonstrate that adjustments affect brain waves.  Yes, adjustments are not just about your spine and joints.

An experiment in 2004 in the U.S. produced radically different EEG (electroencephalograph) images  before and after the administration of a chiropractic adjustment.


The post-adjustment EEGs showed patterns that were significantly more complete, organized and stronger. Psychologists conducting the study said they would need 50-200 biofeedback sessions to get the kind of changes they saw with just one chiropractic adjustment.

Another experiment conducted in New Zealand in 2006 showed that after an adjustment the brain processes, integrates, and coordinates sensory information more efficiently. 

Again, in 2009, a Japanese study using PET (positron emission tomography) scans showing real-time function revealed that the adjustment positively affected the areas of the brain that control autonomic balance, immune function, emotional awareness, blood pressure and respiratory regulation.

The adjustment also impacted a litany of physical and emotional functions: reward anticipation, motivation, rational cognitive function, go/no go risk aversion, language production, verb usage, semantic memory, visual perception, sensory integration, facial recognition, muscle control, eye movement, posture, conversion of starch to sugar, and sensory measurement.

WOW!  We can now say with certainty that chiropractic adjustments improve your brain function.

An important result of improved brain function is reduced stress. A study in 1990 found that 95% of diseases and illnesses are caused by stress, including heart disease, cancer, lung disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s. The other 5% was determined to be genetic in nature, which is unregulated stress at the cellular level.

Pain hurts but stress kills.

Traditional medicine has no answer for stress-related challenges. None. Medicating the body only hides conscious awareness of symptoms and allows them to fester silently. On top of this health-avoidance effect, medication often makes things worse by delivering chemical toxicity to the liver and kidneys.

Chiropractic adjustments, meanwhile, normalize and maximize brain function to build the body’s ability to respond to stressors.

The Chiropractic Adjustment

For years people have gone to Chiropractors to help them with their pain and joint problems. They have quickly learned by getting an adjustment that they feel better immediately.

Research suggests that the immediate help comes from beta endorphins and enkephalins released into the system. But what causes that to happen? After a chiropractic adjustment the nervous system sends an afferent (incoming) electrical impulse from the spinal cord and point of contact to the brain.

The impulse causes  a “pattern interrupt” that reboots the nervous system. In the moment of the adjustment, the brain stops its habitual responses and starts fresh. The process is much like what your heart does when you sneeze. The reset enables the brain to create new pathways of regeneration. A host of chemicals are released, and the body feels relaxed and at ease.

The brain has the task of regulating all bodily functions.  Extreme circumstances, like stress, cause it to become exhausted. When the sympathetic nervous system is in over drive for far too long it causes the autonomic functions to become weakened. Breathing, heart rate, perspiration, temperature, digestion, all struggle when the sympathetic system has to divert too much energy for its own maintenance. Without a balance between these precisely regulated systems our body becomes diseased. The brain consumes extra resources it normally would not need at the expense of the other systems. The body breaks down and regeneration becomes hindered.

Chiropractic adjustments help the brain to create new habitual responses that replace the repetitive overdrive it has found itself in. Adjustments are the best clinical interventions for encouraging nervous system neo formation, necessary for healthy bodies. They support the processes of thinking, being, doing to become easier and more efficient.

It is said that the brain believes what you tell it. If you tell it you are sick it lives through that existence. If you tell it you are happy and well, it will believe that, too. Resetting the brain with a chiropractic adjustment and generating new patterns of existence creates useful, functional, stable ways to live a healthful life.

Healing a dysregulated brain.

According to brain based wellness, a balanced nervous system should give you high energy levels, few symptoms, resistance to infection, positive mental attitude, mental alertness and you should be in excellent health. Good, balanced brain waves are the ability to shift from one brain state to another. Without this, the real problem is the brain’s impaired ability to regulate itself. When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed because of a constant state of stressors it has trouble regulating its normal function. Because of the sympathetic overstimulation, it becomes burned out.

Jean Charles Genet, Director of the National Center for Integrative Medicine and The National Center for Chronic fatigue says, “The weakness or inability to reach and maintain certain frequencies related directly to the specific symptom or ailment experienced.”

The nervous system when out of balance can result in four different states:

Under- arousal , disorders like depression and ADHD.

Over-Arousal , anxiety disorders including panic attacks and PTSD.

Instability , bipolar disorder, seizures and migraines.

Exhausted , autoimmune system disorders, cancer, diabetes, chronic fatigue.

Chiropractic adjustments directly affect the nervous system by rebooting it, an instantaneous shutdown and restart, a pattern interrupt, the only non invasive procedure to do this. Dysregulated brain frequencies are interrupted and the system is allowed to correct itself in that moment. That is why after an adjustment a patient can feel an immediate sense of relief throughout their whole body. Using this as a tool for regulating a dysregulated system has been extremely helpful in creating a functioning internal environment that fights dis-ease. The Chiropractic adjustment communicates through the central nervous system to the cortical regions of the brain (thought processes and storage) with direct line influences on autonomic functions. When the system has been overwhelmed with incoming stimuli, the regulation becomes taxed and can no longer adapt. This is called Sympathetic Survival Syndrome. I dysregulated system will eventually lead to disease.

In my clinic, I employ a treatment protocol that reorganizes brain and nervous system function. It includes spinal adjustments to the nervous system to reset/reboot the system, health awareness (good habits; bad habits), nutritional and physical reconditioning education, biofeedback, neurofeedback and entrainment.

Biofeedback aids the patient in managing proper muscle tone, heart rate, breathing, temperature and perspiration modulation. These are under autonomic control through the limbic system and if impaired will systematically cause death.

Neurofeedback leads to improved brain self regulation. It allows for information to be received by the brain and then rewarding it for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. A person can train themselves to regulate their brain frequencies.

Brain Entrainment is the synchronization of the brain to an external frequency by auditory and ocular input. Auditory healing creates favorable frequencies by way of the auditory canal that directly influence the brain and the body through its neurological input and by interaction of the Vagus nerve to the autonomic  systems of the body i.e. heart, respiration, digestion. Ocular healing creates favorable frequencies by way of the optic nerve communicating to the brain that which it has to match up with. Flashing led lights force the brain to match its frequencies.

I utilize a tool in my clinic called Mindfit to entrain the brain to adapt to various frequencies. Thereby, making the brain more adaptable. Adaptability is a key to health. Mindfit is an excellent product for reestablishing good adaptive frequencies by auditory and ocular input. The brain matches the frequencies presented and establishes an adaptive Rhythm there by promoting improved neurological function.

The nervous systems maladaptability to stress is the cause of disease. 85%-95% of our brain activity is subconscious therefore if your system is out of balance you most probably do not realize it. By being able to measure nervous system outcomes and by implementing non invasive, non drug treatments that directly affect it, the body will right itself. I Am Offering A Natural Treatment For PTSD

Stress disorders and suicides among veterans and service members are at epidemic proportions. To do my part to fight these tragedies, I extend an offer to our community to treat three veterans with post traumatic stress disorder free of charge in my clinic.
I was motivated to offer free treatments when I read an article about the results of a 2010 study that found 22 service members commit suicide every day. Paul Rieckhoff, the founder of Iraq and Afganistan Veterans of America called the epidemic of suicides an “outrage.” He urged national attention to the problem of vets struggling with “invisible wounds,” and said traditional risk assessments are no longer adequate to the problem. We need to add “ways to identify life stressors and concerns earlier,” he said. Current treatment options at SFVAMC are limited to medication and psychotherapy. The meds can have unhealthy side effects and the therapy can take precious time that many vets simply do not have.
As a Chiropractor and Functional Neurologist, I have taken great interest in the brain’s ability to regulate the body. Gray’s Anatomy, the accepted anatomical authority says,-”the nervous system controls all the organs, systems and cells of the body,” making it the driver of healthy function. It is critical that messages from the brain travel down the spinal cord and reach the body’s systems without interference. The cause of interference can be chemical, physical and psychological. Chiropractic adjustment reboots the system, impacting all three causes.
In the healing arts, it has been well understood for years that all diseases are of two general kinds a state of under-activity or a state of over-activity. Medicine’s traditional approach has been to develop drugs that either stimulate or depress the system to attempt a normal balance (homeostasis). If disease is a result of imbalance (that is, over- or under-arousal), then good health is a balanced state.
A person in a balanced state of health would experience strong recovery ability, high energy, few symptoms, resistance to infections, positive mental attitude, present time consciousness, mental alertness and excellent health. He or she would look younger and would remain active and vibrant.
We can measure the state of balance by observing the action of the normal physiological responses of the body, including brain wave activity, heart rate, heart rate variability (the ratio between heart rhythm and respiration rhythm), respiratory rate, hand temperature and skin conductance (skin moisture).
What if the body doesn’t have balance? Then the system cannot adapt to all the activities and stressors of life without consuming more energy. Energy destined for growth and repair now has to go toward keeping everything working the best it can. The system is stressed. It is in one of four states of imbalance: over-arousal, under-arousal, instability and exhaustion. Any of these conditions can be mild, moderate or severe.
Stress is a maladaptive response pattern. In the case of someone with PTSD, the system is over-aroused and chaotic. It reflects conditions associated with hyper-vigilance or panic attacks, loss of quality sleep, and a host of other symptoms. An effective treatment of PTSD ascertains the severity of imbalance by measuring brain waves.
Information is communicated within the brain by electrical/chemical impulse. The impulses can be measured in hertz by an EEG, or electroencephalogram.
The cortex area of our brain stores most of our memories and emotions as well as sensory motor functions. When the patterns of frequency become dysregulated then symptoms and conditions appear. With EEG we can monitor the brain rhythms in the cortex that modulate this system in its response to stress. We can also determine courses of action to change a dysregulated system into a well regulated one.
In my clinic, I employ a treatment protocol that reorganizes brain and nervous system function. It includes spinal adjustments to the nervous system to reset/reboot the system, health awareness (good habits; bad habits), nutritional and physical reconditioning education, biofeedback, neurofeedback and brain entrainment protocols.

Cause of Disease : A New Perspective

Latest Research Reveals Stress Factors Outweigh Germs as Cause of Disease.
For decades billions of research dollars have been poured onto the study of bacteria and viruses as the cause of ill health and disease. The results have produced more medicines and treatment but with failing results! We now have more listed diseases and so many drugs that no one can keep track. It seems that everyone over 50 is on some levels of medicine and the general concept is that this is normal. IT ISN’T. What is going on? There has to be a better way.
The nineteen nineties were known as the decade of the brain. During these ten years, more knowledge was gathered about the brain, and its function, than had been known in all the previous years. Now, in this decade, the focus is on “consciousness” and again the research shows the role the nervous system plays in our ability to be healthy has changed the concepts of health and disease.
Why don’t you know about this? The answer is simple it doesn’t involve the sale of drugs and has created a major dilemma for the medical profession. The medical profession has become so invested in drug based therapy that it is virtually impossible for them to shift to a new understanding.
This is not the case for most researchers as their attitude is the “The truth shall set you free”. Over the last 40 years there has been a group of PhDs working on bio and neuro feedback with fantastic results. These researchers have created a way to objectively measure changes in nervous system function and the resulting effects on people’s health.
When we look at both research groups (the neuroscience and the biofeedback) a completely new understanding of the cause of disease and illness takes shape.
In 1977 Dr. John Knowles, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, wrote in DAEDALUS, (Winter, 1977): “80% of serious illnesses seem to develop when the individual feels helpless or hopeless” “over 99 percent of us are born healthy and made sick as a result of human misbehavior”
In 2000 a paper produced by the National Institute of Health (NIH) stated: “But in the last decade, scientists like Dr. Esther Sternberg, director of the Integrative Neural Immune Program at NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), have been rediscovering the links between the brain and the immune system.”
It has now become obvious that when it comes to disease, in either prevention of, or creation of, the relationship between the nervous system and the immune system is the key factor and not viruses and/or bacteria. The billions or trillions spent on disease research such as cancer has only produced limited results with the primary benefit being early detection.
It is time for this new perspective to become the foundations for not only further research but more importantly patient care! Over the last ten years there has been much talk about the need for evidence based care. This term has become the buzz word in all health professions and has taken on the power of becoming a method of evaluating the quality of patient care. While this is an important concept, what has been missed with evidence based care is the true need of “caused based care”.

Historical Foundation for Care
This begs the question of, “What is Cause?” When we look at traditional approaches in health care we find that they are based on signs and symptoms to form a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis (disease name) has been established then the treatment is applied. This approach is reflected in current medical practice. Patient complaints (symptoms), then various tests (signs)which leads to a drug or procedure indicated as the treatment for this pattern (disease). We have come to accept this as typical practice and over time have become the standard by which all care is measured. This is the foundation of the “evidence based care” mentioned earlier.
What we have is “symptom based care” not “cause” based. As the research continues to produce a greater and greater understanding in the role of the stress response related to the cause of disease, health professions around the world are being forced to revisit their approaches to patient care. We know that today we have research which connects the nervous system with the immune system but this is a relatively new discovery. It wasn’t until the 1980s that medical research finally found these two systems directly connected. Until then their position was that they were two completely different and separate systems. The importance of this point is that until we understood the relationship between the nervous system and the immune system there wasn’t any foundation to establish “cause” beyond signs and symptoms.

The Role of the Nervous system
An anatomy textbook, by Lockhart, Hamilton and Fyfe, describes the nervous system this way: “Even in the smallest community of men the activities of different individuals must be coordinated by some central authority for the common good – nature has solved the same problem by creating a controlling system.” This controlling system (the nervous system) receives information from the environment, both external and internal, sends it to the brain (the central organizing authority) and then the brain sends signals out to the systems of the body to create an appropriate response. We now know that this includes the immune system, whose responsibility it is to protect us from outside influences such as bacteria and viruses. The nervous system has several divisions. It has a sensory division whose job is to relay information into the brain and a motor division which carries action information to the muscles. There is another division which runs automatically and takes care of the subconscious needs such as heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature, skin moisture, muscle tone, digestion, excretion and many other factors. About 84% of brain activity is dedicated to just keeping the body running without us ever being aware of these activities. The immune system depends upon the nervous system information to keep us healthy. As the body is regarded as a closed loop system, meaning that all the systems have an influence on one another; it requires a level of balance or harmony to function correctly. Any factor that upsets the control division will create disturbances in the other systems. This includes the immune response.

The role of the Immune System
The immune system is our “On Guard 24/7” system. It never sleeps and responds to any injury. It doesn’t even have to wait for injury to happen and will even be “kicked” into action to a perceived threat. The nervous system creates special hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol to stimulate the immune and other systems into action. These threats are called “Stressors” and may be as serious as a severe wound all the way down to a perceived (may not be real) threat. The first level of response to an injury (perceived or real) lies within the nervous system, and the immune response is the first to answer the call. There are several levels of activity effected including: Increases in heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, sweat gland activity, muscle tone, platelet production, decreased hand and feet temperature, and changes in brain wave activity.
In fact there are many other factors involved including the release of hormones such as Glucagons (Pancreas stimulating), Glucocorticoids (Steroids), and prolactin (Pituitary – reproduction suppression). The latest research and books being published on the effects of “stressors” and “stress response” clearly explain the connection between neurological function, immune system involvement and health patterns. According to researchers at Duke University, because of the stress/inflammation link, stress hormones stimulate the release of inflammatory chemicals by the immune system. This stress response is now the primary factor in arteriole plaque formation – so neurological stress responses plays a much bigger factor in cardiovascular health than diet.
The reason for the plaquing is because of the release of sticky platelets (clotting factor) due to the perception of danger (possible bleed injury) during a stress response. Some very revealing work on this was released in an article titled: “Beyond Cholesterol” – by Judith Mandelbaum-Schmid in Body and Soul, July/August 2004

The Role of Stress Reponses
Stress is a fact of life! Stressors in moderation are, in reality, good for our systems! Even exercise is a stressor and yet without it muscle tone deceases and we lose power and mobility. Gravity helps our bones retain their strength. Our nervous system has developed a variety of responses to stressors that will provide a better ability to survive environmental challenges. These challenges can range from a perceived threat to an outright life threatening event. Even a subconscious concept of a threat will be registered and the neurophysiology will act accordingly. An example if an adult was attacked by a dog as a child and later on in life seeing a dog similar to the one who attacked, the subconscious mind will trigger a stressful fear response. This will happen even though the adult knows they are safe from an attack, the subconscious will remember the danger and there will be changes in the neurophysiology of the body.
Here is the catch – it isn’t so much that stressors or the stress response are the culprits here but rather it’s your ability to recover from the experience. The ideal goal is for your body to regain a normal balance within your neurological function. Blood pressure must return to ideal, hand temperature warms up, heart rate slows down, and respiration becomes slow and regular. Internally the stress response chemicals such as cortisol and adrenalin return to normal levels. Insulin and blood sugar levels return to normal. If this doesn’t happen then we have a problem and systems will start to breakdown as they are not designed to maintain a constant stress response activity level. If the body remains in the stress response state (even if a low level) over time there is a price to be paid. Remember the role of the immune system and it relationship to the nervous system? Prolonged levels of the stress response state shuts down the immune response!

In the past 20 years, the field of psychoneuroimmunology has demonstrated major connections between the stress pathways and the immune system. They are interactive two way connections between the nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system. These Stress Pathways include: the Hypothalmo-pituitary-medulla (HPA) Axis; the Sympathetic-Adrenal-Medulla (SNS) Axis and the Vagus Nerve (PNS).
These pathways have a direct and powerful effect on the immune system. The immune system has an innate or natural immune response (Genetic patterns) and an adaptive immune response (experienced).

– Anatomical Barriers (mucous membrane)
– Lymphatic system
– Phagocytosis
– Inflammation (Mast cells)
Natural Killer Cells:
Complement proteins
Acute phase proteins

The Immune Adaptive Group
The adaptive group involves the formation of immune cells produced by cytokines (interleukins, interferons), called T Helper cells named Th1 and Th2. Maintaining a Balance between Th1 and Th2 is optimal for good immune system function. The critical information about this balance is that in a time of stress there is a shift of cytokines away from the Th1 cells and toward the production of Th2 cells. Th1 cells involve cellular immunity while Th2 cells involve the humoral immunity (Antibody production). The stress response decrease Th1 and increase Th2 production as well as decreasing the production of the innate factors of the immune response.
What this means, is that our stress response recovery patterns are critical in understanding why our immune system is not functioning correctly. A decrease in cellar protection (Th1) leads to the formation of cellular breakdown and mutations (Cancer) while an increase of humoral immunity (Th2) lead to increased sensitivities to chemical agents.
As we now look at our high stress life style we can begin to understand the exponential increase in Cancers, hyper-sensitivities to nuts, other foods or chemicals and the growth of autoimmune system diseases.
The research on the brain and its function continues to reveal a new understanding of the cause of disease and illness.
As we now have an explanation of the role of the brain and the nervous system in relationship to the immune system activity, any brain injury will have serious direct effects on the state of health for the individual. Meisel et al., Nature Rev. Neurosci. 6:775-786, 2005
We tend to view the term “brain injury” as a massive trauma but with the above information we need to rethink the term. Any level of altered brain activity (abnormal pattern) is in fact a brain injury. The only difference is the low level abnormal pattern is covert (unnoticed) in nature but has the same outcome over time. It will interfere with the immune system and create the shift to the right in Cytokine production. When you add the misinformation that the abnormal brain function also is sending to the other body systems, we can begin to see how this new perspective on the cause of disease is rapidly gaining acceptance throughout the health professions.
We are now beginning to see articles and papers on the effects of stress on every aspect of heath concerns. Dentists are talking about the effects of stress on teeth and decay. Prestigious medical schools such as: Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Duke, Johns Hopkins and Northwestern have recently published research that is changing the way in which doctors will treat pain or dysfunction. Chronic 5 pain and dysfunction are now also seen as disorders of the brain and nerve system, not just the spine, joints or muscles. The research also states that the best treatments are the least invasive, and don’t involve surgery, and address both the injured spine, joints, or muscles AND also address the painful or disruptive nerve signals in the brain

Missing the Rug
So now that the rug has been pulled out from under the germ theory as the cause of disease, where does this leave us in the health care field? All you have to do is go online and do a search for “stress and disease” and you will see that this field is ever expanding. The new understanding of the relationship between stress and disease is changing every form of health care. What we need now is a method of stress response measurement. With objective measurements of the neurophysiological response and recovery during and after a stressful experience we will have a great deal of valuable information regarding the state of a patient’s health. The challenge there in, is that we are dealing with a dynamic being always sensing and adapting. This means that any type of static examination such as x-ray, static para-spinal scanning including sEMG and thermal, postural, or even blood testing only presents information on that patient as a moment in time. It is rather like looking at a small part of a Salvador Dali painting and thinking that you have seen the entire picture. This holds true within the health profession and yet we now stand on the greatest breakthrough in the knowledge of the cause of disease in the history of mankind. Many unanswered questions of the past including the great mystery of “spontaneous remission” of serious diseases can now be explained and understood, however, it requires letting go of concepts such as the “Germ theory” on the part of Medicine or the “nerve root compression theory” in Chiropractic.
Letting go of these does not detract from the profession while applying the newly revealed workings that the human body has the power to advance our ability to live healthier and a happier lives.
