This review concerns the practice of stick stretching and is in addition to my previous review.

I’ve been getting chiropractic care from Dr. Mark for the last year and have found it to be priceless. As my core has grown and adjusted to having a straight spine, Dr. Mark recommended I start practicing stick stretching to loosen up my hips, shoulders and generally work on my balance. I started with a simple 15 minute dvd with some guided stretches and then took to it myself discovering all sorts of nooks and crannies in my body that I had previously been ignorant of.

Stick stretching is pretty much what it sounds like. One uses a 3-7 foot martial arts stick to explore the range of motion in all the joints of the body. The stick adds stability to the stretches and also facilitates flexibility that I didn’t even know I had.

I can also use the stick to self massage various parts that have always been super stiff.

I spend about 15 minutes every day loosening up with the stick before I begin any of my other physical activities like biking or working out with the soccer ball.

Opioid Crisis solved by Chiropractors

Chiropractors for over 100 years have been treating the body directly through the nervous system for pain and anxiety issues. The nervous system is the central controlling authority of the other eight. The answer to managing opioid toxicity is by Chiropractors being the Holistic Naturopaths that they are. The cost to the government would be minuscule compared to what will happen. Sadly, Chiropractors once again will be overlooked for their solution. This picture shows their first attempt, morphine.

Are You Just Breathing?

From the moment we are born we gasp for that first important breath that will keep us alive for three quarters of a century or more. Ancient forms of medicine knew that poor breathing reduces our vitality and lessens our ability to ward off disease. The breath has enormous benefits for health that most people don’t take seriously or know very little about. All clients in my clinic get instructions on how to breathe. It is something we take for granted because we can, for a while. Are you a chest breather or a belly breather? Let’s briefly look at one aspect of how this works.
The absence of carbon dioxide creates deficiencies in bicarbonate ions. Potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium are buffers for this process. It is commonly known that carbon dioxide respiration through carbonic acid via the lungs is a dominant acid control mechanism. Bicarbonate via the kidneys is the dominant alkali control for the blood. The deficiency in carbon dioxide can adversely affect the acid/alkali balance system. This dysfunction normally happens when tissues tend towards anaerobic metabolism resulting in elevated accumulation of lactic acid and hydrogen ions. Most functional diseases (Alzheimers, heart diseases, diabetes, cancers) and the aging process is nothing more than slow acidification of the body. Stress and Disease

Who has stress?  We all do.  But does anyone know what it is?

Stress produces pain and disease, which may be eased by medical or alternative treatments that target individual symptoms, but most treatments miss the underlying cause of stress.

Most of the uncomfortable and unhealthy physiological reactions we have to the stressors in our environment are a result of the brain’s failure to adequately regulate the nervous system.

The brain is the body’s control center. It manages the function of every organ, system and cell. When brain rhythms become dysregulated due to unhealthy lifestyles or environmental toxins, the brain is unable to keep the rest of the body in harmony.

Messages from the brain must travel down the spinal cord and reach the body’s organs without interference. Neurological pathways must be able to transmit accurate information from the organs back to the brain. The three basic kinds of stressors – trauma, thoughts and toxins – interfere with the electro-chemical transmission of messages along the body’s neurological pathways, keeping organs and systems from functioning as they should.

So what happens if the body is out of balance?  Systems no longer work in a state of ease, and the body requires more energy to adapt to the events of life and the world around it. Energy destined for growth and normal repair has to go to keeping everything working the best it can, and the body becomes weak.

Medicine’s traditional approach to correct maladaptive patterns in the nervous system has been to develop drugs that either stimulate or depress the system to attempt a normal balance or homeostasis.

But now, a growing body of research shows that chiropractic adjustments, long known as an effective way to maintain muscle and joint health, produce neurological stimulus that interrupts interference patterns to “reboot” the nervous system so the brain can reset itself.

The treatment I provide in my clinic is a neuro-chiropractic protocol that reorganizes brain and nervous system function by using the electroencephalogram (EEG).

I measure for imbalance in the cortex and the limbic system by gauging physiological responses. Common measurements I take include brain wave activity, heart rate, heart rate variability (the relationship between heart and respiration), respiratory rate, hand temperatures and skin conductance (skin moisture).

The impulses or frequencies are measured in hertz by the EEG to detect dysregulation. A healthy brain should be able to move easily from one frequency to the next and maintain a balanced ratio among them, enabling the cortex and limbic system to communicate with each other for overall function.

The cortex, or outer brain, is the seat of most of our memories and emotions as well as our motor functions. It communicates information by electrical-chemical impulse. The limbic system, or inner brain, operates by influencing the endocrine and autonomic systems. It manages our unconscious functions such as breathing, heart rate, temperature, and perspiration.

The EEG monitors rhythms that modulate the nervous system’s response to stress, enabling practitioner and patient to determine courses of action to change a dysregulated system into an adaptable one.

Neuro-chiropractic treatment includes chiropractic adjustments to the nervous system, health awareness (identification of good habits and bad habits), nutritional and physical reconditioning education, biofeedback, neurofeedback and brain entrainment protocols.

Treatment components realign the body to its natural state, achieving balance and long term health without drugs or surgeries.

The neuro-chiropractic treatment is a non-pharmacological means to interrupt maladaptive nervous system patterns, preventing disease and achieving homeostasis, a healthy balance.

A well-balanced person not only looks younger, but remains active and vibrant, experiencing more acute awareness, good recovery ability, high energy, few symptoms, resistance to infections, a positive attitude, and mental alertness. In short, excellent health.

Treating the symptoms of stress may provide temporary relief, but only understanding and acting on the underlying causes can promote long-term health.

Pain Hurts But Stress Kills

Clinical studies in the last 10 years show the benefits of chiropractic adjustments beyond reduction of pain and inflammation. Studies using EEGs and PET scans of the brain demonstrate that adjustments affect brain waves.  Yes, adjustments are not just about your spine and joints.

An experiment in 2004 in the U.S. produced radically different EEG (electroencephalograph) images  before and after the administration of a chiropractic adjustment.

 

The post-adjustment EEGs showed patterns that were significantly more complete, organized and stronger. Psychologists conducting the study said they would need 50-200 biofeedback sessions to get the kind of changes they saw with just one chiropractic adjustment.

Another experiment conducted in New Zealand in 2006 showed that after an adjustment the brain processes, integrates, and coordinates sensory information more efficiently. 

Again, in 2009, a Japanese study using PET (positron emission tomography) scans showing real-time function revealed that the adjustment positively affected the areas of the brain that control autonomic balance, immune function, emotional awareness, blood pressure and respiratory regulation.

The adjustment also impacted a litany of physical and emotional functions: reward anticipation, motivation, rational cognitive function, go/no go risk aversion, language production, verb usage, semantic memory, visual perception, sensory integration, facial recognition, muscle control, eye movement, posture, conversion of starch to sugar, and sensory measurement.

WOW!  We can now say with certainty that chiropractic adjustments improve your brain function.

An important result of improved brain function is reduced stress. A study in 1990 found that 95% of diseases and illnesses are caused by stress, including heart disease, cancer, lung disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s. The other 5% was determined to be genetic in nature, which is unregulated stress at the cellular level.

Pain hurts but stress kills.

Traditional medicine has no answer for stress-related challenges. None. Medicating the body only hides conscious awareness of symptoms and allows them to fester silently. On top of this health-avoidance effect, medication often makes things worse by delivering chemical toxicity to the liver and kidneys.

Chiropractic adjustments, meanwhile, normalize and maximize brain function to build the body’s ability to respond to stressors.

The Chiropractic Adjustment

For years people have gone to Chiropractors to help them with their pain and joint problems. They have quickly learned by getting an adjustment that they feel better immediately.

Research suggests that the immediate help comes from beta endorphins and enkephalins released into the system. But what causes that to happen? After a chiropractic adjustment the nervous system sends an afferent (incoming) electrical impulse from the spinal cord and point of contact to the brain.

The impulse causes  a “pattern interrupt” that reboots the nervous system. In the moment of the adjustment, the brain stops its habitual responses and starts fresh. The process is much like what your heart does when you sneeze. The reset enables the brain to create new pathways of regeneration. A host of chemicals are released, and the body feels relaxed and at ease.

The brain has the task of regulating all bodily functions.  Extreme circumstances, like stress, cause it to become exhausted. When the sympathetic nervous system is in over drive for far too long it causes the autonomic functions to become weakened. Breathing, heart rate, perspiration, temperature, digestion, all struggle when the sympathetic system has to divert too much energy for its own maintenance. Without a balance between these precisely regulated systems our body becomes diseased. The brain consumes extra resources it normally would not need at the expense of the other systems. The body breaks down and regeneration becomes hindered.

Chiropractic adjustments help the brain to create new habitual responses that replace the repetitive overdrive it has found itself in. Adjustments are the best clinical interventions for encouraging nervous system neo formation, necessary for healthy bodies. They support the processes of thinking, being, doing to become easier and more efficient.

It is said that the brain believes what you tell it. If you tell it you are sick it lives through that existence. If you tell it you are happy and well, it will believe that, too. Resetting the brain with a chiropractic adjustment and generating new patterns of existence creates useful, functional, stable ways to live a healthful life.

Change Your Brain, Change Your Game

Perhaps there is a simple solution to your chronic pain, sickness and fatigue.

Healing a dysregulated brain.

According to brain based wellness, a balanced nervous system should give you high energy levels, few symptoms, resistance to infection, positive mental attitude, mental alertness and you should be in excellent health. Good, balanced brain waves are the ability to shift from one brain state to another. Without this, the real problem is the brain’s impaired ability to regulate itself. When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed because of a constant state of stressors it has trouble regulating its normal function. Because of the sympathetic overstimulation, it becomes burned out.

Jean Charles Genet, Director of the National Center for Integrative Medicine and The National Center for Chronic fatigue says, “The weakness or inability to reach and maintain certain frequencies related directly to the specific symptom or ailment experienced.”

The nervous system when out of balance can result in four different states:

Under- arousal , disorders like depression and ADHD.

Over-Arousal , anxiety disorders including panic attacks and PTSD.

Instability , bipolar disorder, seizures and migraines.

Exhausted , autoimmune system disorders, cancer, diabetes, chronic fatigue.

Chiropractic adjustments directly affect the nervous system by rebooting it, an instantaneous shutdown and restart, a pattern interrupt, the only non invasive procedure to do this. Dysregulated brain frequencies are interrupted and the system is allowed to correct itself in that moment. That is why after an adjustment a patient can feel an immediate sense of relief throughout their whole body. Using this as a tool for regulating a dysregulated system has been extremely helpful in creating a functioning internal environment that fights dis-ease. The Chiropractic adjustment communicates through the central nervous system to the cortical regions of the brain (thought processes and storage) with direct line influences on autonomic functions. When the system has been overwhelmed with incoming stimuli, the regulation becomes taxed and can no longer adapt. This is called Sympathetic Survival Syndrome. I dysregulated system will eventually lead to disease.

In my clinic, I employ a treatment protocol that reorganizes brain and nervous system function. It includes spinal adjustments to the nervous system to reset/reboot the system, health awareness (good habits; bad habits), nutritional and physical reconditioning education, biofeedback, neurofeedback and entrainment.

Biofeedback aids the patient in managing proper muscle tone, heart rate, breathing, temperature and perspiration modulation. These are under autonomic control through the limbic system and if impaired will systematically cause death.

Neurofeedback leads to improved brain self regulation. It allows for information to be received by the brain and then rewarding it for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. A person can train themselves to regulate their brain frequencies.

Brain Entrainment is the synchronization of the brain to an external frequency by auditory and ocular input. Auditory healing creates favorable frequencies by way of the auditory canal that directly influence the brain and the body through its neurological input and by interaction of the Vagus nerve to the autonomic  systems of the body i.e. heart, respiration, digestion. Ocular healing creates favorable frequencies by way of the optic nerve communicating to the brain that which it has to match up with. Flashing led lights force the brain to match its frequencies.

I utilize a tool in my clinic called Mindfit to entrain the brain to adapt to various frequencies. Thereby, making the brain more adaptable. Adaptability is a key to health. Mindfit is an excellent product for reestablishing good adaptive frequencies by auditory and ocular input. The brain matches the frequencies presented and establishes an adaptive Rhythm there by promoting improved neurological function.

The nervous systems maladaptability to stress is the cause of disease. 85%-95% of our brain activity is subconscious therefore if your system is out of balance you most probably do not realize it. By being able to measure nervous system outcomes and by implementing non invasive, non drug treatments that directly affect it, the body will right itself. It has the knowledge, it needs the opportunity.
